A Step Forward in Function and Comfort
The use of orthotics and prosthetics in veterinary practice has lagged some way behind that seen in human practice and has traditionally been based on the use of mouldable plastics or external coaptation or support using various materials. Part of the difficulty in their use is that there is a trade-off between function and comfort. Adequate support of a joint or structure often results in a device that is uncomfortable and not tolerated by the patient. If it is comfortable then it often lacks the support to fulfil its function. Recently there has been a revolution in this area with the introduction of WIMBA. Using extraordinarily accurate scanning, the WimbaSCAN technology can measure complex joints to an accuracy of 0.2mm, allowing the production of a custom-made orthosis that fulfils the requirement of both function and comfort. This new approach has several major advantages not previously available to those in the veterinary rehabilitation sector.
CUSTOM DESIGN:
Using a novel scanning apparatus, an animal’s limb is measured in a weight-bearing posture allowing an accurate detailing of their anatomy and angulation. Using an online platform the data is sent for analysis and confirmation of suitability of orthosis. Then using 3D printing and AI technology, a custom-made device is produced specifically for the area of concern.
TOLERANCE AND UTILITY:
One of the key advantages of Wimba is that the use of cushioned inserts in combination with the individual design results in a device that is both functional and has high comfort levels with excellent patient wearability. The materials used are durable and waterproof, not only permitting easy cleaning for day-to-day use but also use during water-based rehabilitation. The hinged devices also have interchangeable WimbaTOKENS which can regulate the degree of flexion and extension though the joints. This allows for a truly adaptive individual rehabilitation programme that can be modified throughout a patient’s recovery journey.
APPLICATIONS:
The extensive WIMBA portfolio has a wide array of applications, for example for the support of hyperextension injuries in carpi and tarsi, rigid support after calcaneal tendon injuries, and with the new Stifle brace, post-surgical support after cruciate ligament surgery, especially in later years if the surgical site suffers degenerative arthropathy. Equally, the devices can be used in a preventative manner. Following cranial cruciate surgery, a high proportion of dog’s risk rupture in the contralateral limb. Where there is concern at the time of surgery (e.g. pain in the contralateral stifle, radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis, or evidence of inflammation on arthrocentesis) the stifle brace can be used in a preventative supporting manner, potentially avoiding painful and costly surgery.
EASE OF USE:
Everything about the WIMBA system has been designed with utility in mind. From the accessible mobile app for ordering, the easy application, adjustment, removal, and the comfort experienced by the patient, WIMBA is designed with the operator, owner, and patient at the forefront. The devices are even eco- friendly using sustainable materials!
WIMBA orthotics represent a novel technological solution to injury rehabilitation and prevention, with unparalleled comfort and function. This exciting technology has been embraced by Nupsala Veterinary Services and the MSK Vets. For more information or to request a demonstration contact us on info@nupsala.com or info@nupsalamsk.co.uk
