Understanding Your Referral Options

MSK Vets operates as a musculoskeletal outpatient department, not a conventional referral hospital. This means that in most cases, your practice remains responsible for the patient and their client relationship, while we provide the specialist diagnostics, procedures, or investigations you need to support their care.

Whichever option you choose, our team will keep things as straightforward as possible. If you have any questions about which route is right for your patient, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

When referring a patient, there are two pathways available:

Vet-led Referral

You remain responsible for the patient and instruct MSK Vets on exactly what you need, whether that’s a lameness investigation, CT, radiography, ultrasound, arthroscopy, joint injection, or a regenerative medicine procedure. We carry out the requested work and return the information you need to continue managing the case. You choose the level of reporting required, from a simple summary through to a full diagnostic work-up with recommendations, or imaging files, depending on what is most useful to you and your client.

All services under this pathway are invoiced directly to your practice, and as the referring vet you’ll benefit from a 10% discount on our standard service costs. To find out more about pricing, please get in touch.

Case Transfer to MSK Vets

For patients with osteoarthritis or those requiring long-term ongoing management, you may choose to transfer responsibility for the case to MSK Vets entirely. From this point, we take over all aspects of case management and communicate directly with the client, including invoicing. This pathway is best suited to complex or chronic cases where continuity of specialist care is the priority.
